Wow, I can not believe that Columbus Day Weekend is just around the corner! Vermont has seen many happening over the past month, some good, some bad. Irene put a bit of a damper on our end of summer, however she is in the past and we are ready for Foliage!

Octobrewfest will take place this Columbus day weekend, at Mt Snow, which is only 1 mile north! There will 30 breweries, and Craft Festival, and of course Scenic Chair lift rides! There has been much on the news regarding Southern Vermont, and Wilmington sustaining a large amount of damage from Tropical Storm Irene Flooding. While this is true, it is also true that Vermonters do not stay down. On the night the rain stopped, people were out with trucks and machines to repair impassable roads. Over 60% of the roads that were washed out have been repaired in the last week! That shows just how much determination we have to have Vermont ready for all our visitors during this busy upcoming foliage season! We, here at the Doveberry Inn, were just fine during the storm. We are anxiously awaiting our visitors and welcome all! If anyone is concerned about coming, please call us. This past weekend Mount Snow hosted the Tough Mudders! It is an obstacle course that consists of military obstacles, over 10.5 miles up and down the mountain! The Tough Mudder is for Charity, the Wounded Warrior Project! The only thing you get when you complete the course is personal gratification. It is an AWESOME event! Was great to watch, too!

This event brought upwards of $170000 from this Mount Snow event alone! It was the largest participant sporting event in Vermont history! I felt I should blog about this, because although NESN carried it, it seems Vermont media neglected to cover the event. Too Bad! I would think that the Wounded Warrior Project is a very important one!

It seems that Tough Mudder will be here, hopefully, for 2012! If you have not checked it out, you should! You may just want to try it for yourself next year!

The New Year Brings New Beginnings

The Year 2011 brings fresh beginnings! Michael and I are entering our 17th winter here at the Doveberry Inn! We have seen many snowfalls, January thaws, perfect bluebird skies under which to ski, golf or hike! We have served many dinners to many people, house guests and outside diners. Over the years we have noticed changes, some good, some bad.

With the New Year we have decided to start some new traditions here at the Doveberry Inn. We are going to be focusing on our guests more than before. The afternoons are going to be jazzed up with more than just cookies and cocoa. The new fireplace is much warmer, so we want our guests to feel more warmth all around. Perhaps some cheese and wine to linger over?

Our dining room will be focused on Inn guests as well. We are still going to be preparing breakfast and dinner for our guests. We have decided to take the dining room in a different direction. We will have a limited menu, but serving mainly house guests. This will allow better dinner times, less parking issues, and more relaxing experience. No more fighting for a parking space, and no more interruptions while sitting by the fire.

We truly enjoy all our guests. We want this to be a true cozy Vermont Inn experience, with all the trimmings! So as you return to our little slice of Vermont, know that our House guests are our number one priority!

Spring Skiing

Spring Skiing has Never Been Better!!!

About 2 weeks ago we received 55 inches of snow in 3 days! It was unbelievable! In 16 years of being an Innkeeper in Vt we have scene some snow storms, but never that much in such a short time! Of course this is great for the skiers and riders out there. I have always told my guests, March is the BEST skiing there is! Longer days, warmer days, and now we have so much snow that the mountain has been 100% open every day! Can't make it this weekend? Think about taking a day off next Wednesday, and come ski or ride for only $17! That is right, celebrate St Patrick's day here at Mt Snow and the lift tickets are only $17! Couple that with a room here for only $92 and you have a great getaway, lots of fun, and only a little dough!

We will be skiing and riding well into April, so always check out our last minute specials for the upcoming weekends! WOW! That is all I can say! The total of this storm right now is 29 inches! It is beautiful snow, perfect for grooming to corduroy! We are expecting another 5-8 inches tomorrow and more on Friday. The snow will be over just in time for the weekend. Mount Snow is 100% open with some ungroomed trails, with more powder than usually scene inthe East! You can not miss this. We are receiving almost a foot of fresh snow today! There is great skiing! We have almost 100% of Mount Snow open, and the days are longer! I have always told our guests that late February and March are the BEST skiing months! With fresh beautiful snow, now is the time to book your March Madness Midweek Getaway! Remember, we need some time for ski and stay package deals, so don't wait until the last minute!

Local Products and Sustainability

There is a lot of talk these days about using local products for quality, freshness and sustainability. Mike and I have been practicing this concept since we purchased the inn 15 years ago, however now there is more restaurants using this for promotion.

It is pretty simple, try to purchase within the local economy and seasonally. This offers a cycle of sustainable economy, and product. For example, if you purchase fresh tomatoes in August from a local farm, they are of better quality and freshness. Doing this also ensures the money stays within the local economy, and you are purchasing a product in season.

We have always use local purveyors for our fish, produce, even dairy. For example, we use a Vermont company for our bacon and sausage for breakfast. We often change our menu to reflect produce and fish that are in season. If available, we try to use organic as well. In the summer months, my mother has a large garden and grows organically maintained produce. She lives only a few miles away, so I can go there and pick daily to use for the restaurant. The bounty ranges from fresh green beans and zucchini blossoms for stuffing, to beautiful heirloom tomatoes!

So, if you dine with us in the summer, then come back in the winter and wonder where that dish was you had in the summer, now you know! Supporting local is a great way to enjoy great product, personalized service, and warm friendships. I highly recommend trying to hit a "farmer's market" in your area this year, you never know what you might find. You may even find you become "addicted" to the possibilities!
